Champagne Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 2yo over 1200m drew an average line up with seven of the ten runners maidens, so no surprise when the winningest runner in the race All About Magic saluted. All About Magic was the only two-race winner in the feed beforehand and the filly showed it by scoring very easily. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were eighth (four-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), thirteenth (ten-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), led (alongside the fence and two lengths clear), tenth (ten-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (alongside the fence and a length clear), fourth (four-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and fifteenth (four-off the inside and twelve lengths from the leader). The filly was third wide before going up into second before the home turn then took the front at the 250m and drew away the closing stages to score by two and half lengths in 1:10.99. It was her third win from five starts and her first Blacktype success having missed at Listed level on debut back in the Spring. Hot Tap ended up second the outer on settling then challenged and took the font across the dog leg junction before being headed at the 250m. She fought on for a distant second and gained the Blacktype placing for her record. Buck Shellfish on debut had good support and after settling back ran on well once into clear air to get third on the post. Khitan Warrior led up then was headed across the junction to be fourth turning for home only to fight back and regain third at the 200m then lost that finishing position on the line. Kitty Power was a just fair fifth beaten almost four lengths while the Central Districts visitor Light Up bounded in the air at the start to be last away. He got sent up seventh wide with cover but never ran on at all and was beaten almost six lengths. The rest finished almost seven lengths away and up to over twenty lengths from the winner at the line. This was not a true Listed strength field at all and rather weak so no surprise six of the runners were fillies, as chasing soft Blacktype was clearly the mission of most. All About Magic this season would always beat this field but whether that happens next season as some of them get stronger is debatable.
