Queensland Oaks
Australia | FEATURE RACE GUIDE
History
The Queensland Oaks is a Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies conducted by the Brisbane Racing Club as part of the Queensland racing carnival.
The Queensland Oaks was first run in 1951 won by Maltmaid.
The Queensland Oaks is run under set weight conditions and is usually run over the mile and a half but has been at 2200m when the races are conducted at Doomben. Even with Eagle Farm back in 2019, the Oaks was run at Doomben. In 2021 it returned to Eagle Farm at 2200m but is run after the Derby now.
Interstate and NZ trainers have had a field day. Winning Ways was able to turn that around.
Some of the great bloodlines have been re-established with the Denise's Joy lineage from Joie Denise, Naturalism's sister Crystal Palace winning and Romanee Conti was a top quality mare before producing Ethereal.
Ethereal would go on to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup that year in 2001 after coming from a long way back to win her Oaks.
Winx won her Oaks when the race was run at Doomben in 2015 over 2200m. It was her first G1 as part of her extraordinary winning streak past all the all-time greats.
In fact in years the race was at Doomben, Chris Waller has a great record – Winx, Egg Tart and Youngstar.
The 1999 Oaks was rained out and run a week later. Miss Danehill won the Oaks and another filly Camarena won the Derby. Same thing happened in 2016 with the Oaks back a week when Provocative won.
There was a huge upset in 2019 as a 20-1 shot defeated two 150-1 shots.
Duais gave Edward Cummings his first G1 win as a trainer adding to the family tradition in 2021. It was also Hugh Bowman's 99th.
The 2020 Queensland Oaks was abandoned due to the coronavirus.
It was worth $700,000 in 2023.
Past winners include Evening Peal (1955), Bright Shadow (1968), Analie (1973), Denise's Joy (1976), Surround (1977), Lowan Star (1980), November Rain (1981), Round The World (1987), Bravery (1988), Triscay (1991), Slight Chance (1993), Joie Denise (1995), Arctic Scent (1996), Ethereal (2001), Eskimo Queen (2007), Purple (2009), Winx (2015), Duais (2021) and Gypsy Goddess (2022).
The 2023 Queensland Oaks was won by Amokura from Reo and Noah 'N' A Deel.
